Approximately 2,500 Afghans have applied for special visas.
The first group of Afghanis being evacuated amid threats to their lives for helping U.S. troops during the war is being sent to a military base in Virginia. “Operation Allies Refuge” should start evacuations at the end of July.
Around 2,500 Afghans who have already applied for Special Immigrant Visas are expected to be sent to Fort Lee, Virginia, while they finish the lengthy application process. Sending them to the military base represents a shift from the administration’s initial statements on looking to send them to allied countries or U.S. facilities outside the continental U.S.
The State Department says an estimated 18,000 applicants are awaiting visas, with an estimated 53,000 family members seeking to accompany them. The application process can take more than two years.
